Addicted to biking

Biking today was totally awesome! I find biking is the one sport where tons of miles makes me feel better and better. If i swim a ton i seem to get a bit stale and bored. If I run too much i usually break down......but riding....ahhhh riding. It seems the more miles i put in on the bike the better it feels. Today I felt so strong and smooth i could have stayed out for hours. To top it we had the most killer day, 5th day in a row, not a cloud in the sky, 12 degrees and mountains were incredible.....i'm one lucky bastard!

Tommorow, 6 hours in the saddle, can't wait.

Good night to all the ladies, i think of you all often.

Giga Bike Camp- Day 4

Another brilliant day to cap off a great 4 day block of cycling. We were greeted this morning by blue sky and sun along with some cold pavement and sketchy sections. We started around the waterfront, incredible views and rolled out lochside to lands end. Pretty chill today, i think everyones legs are a bit bagged. I would have liked to try some stage races, I seem to feel better and better as the mileage builds and the fatigue builds. We kept it pretty steady until about 3 hours then did some team time trial stuff, 4*5mins around waddling dog, nothing crazy just smooth. Man i love group riding, the pace builds and the group just rolls smooth and fast, wicked fun.

And so the camp ends, team dinner tonight and a viewing of "The Road to Paris", short but good flick about Lance Armstrongs and US Postal prep for the 2001 Tour....

Now i'm tired and would like to go to bed.....
4 days- 18 hours of riding, 3 hours of running, 2 swims and 1 weight session...24 hours total and 6 hours of oily twister.

Good night Michelle, Angella and Cat.

Giga Bike bike Camp Day 3

I find day 1 of a bike camp pretty smooth, some efforts but fresh in the legs so no big woop

I find the second day harder....some fatigue from day one and this time of year not used to backing days up....so day 2 was tough and i felt pretty smashed at the end

On to day 3.......awesome, in the wise words of Peter Reid....at the end of a cycling block when the body starts to get a bit tired you suddenly start feeling good and that is efficiency. Today was just that, I felt great and the weather didn't hurt either...10 degrees and sunny. Today we rode Malahat, two loops of Shawnigan and back up into the new subdivision that adds about 15 minutes of climbing. The views from the top were nothing short of Dyno-mite!!....incredible. Just under 5 hours, another great session and more tomorrow.

Goodnight Michelle (and Angella)

Dear Chris

Dear Chris,
Please don't beat me up.

Sincerely,

Jasper

Dear Michelle

Dear Michelle,
It is with great pleasure that I start writing my blog again on your behalf. At night I often lay awake and wonder "who shall read such trivial news about my life on the pro golf tour?" And then I am reminded that yes of course, i do have one reader that I must never let down, I must rise to the occasion on your behalf and so that is what i shall do my swan. For it is you that keeps me going in the land of Blog and for that I shall be forever grateful.

Perhaps in another life we could have been something, but alas our parents would never allow it and nor would your boyfriend or my girlfriend. I hope that Chris never reads this because he will know my true feelings for you oh Princess of Blog land. The way I see it, I am like Papa Smurf, you are like Smurfette and Chris is like Gargamel.

On that note, I shall bid you farewell sweet sweet Michelle.

Yours in Blog land,

Jasper

Bike Camp- Day 2- Giga Bike

Today was tough, i won't lie. I don't think I have ever done that much climbing in one ride before. We rode just about every hill this side of the malahat and my legs are tired for sure. However, suffering is often best in groups and it is certainly a good group. For those familiar with victoria here was the route.....
Interurban to Willis point road
Willis point road to Ross/Durrance which is the single coolest road to ride on the island
Down Munns road to Bear Mountain
Up Bear Mountain to the best views in the city
Down Bear Mountain and across to Happy Valley road
Over to East Sooke Road where i get a bit lost
Up Mount Matheson....which might be the toughest climb i have been up in Victoria but it was probably more a case of my legs being completely smashed by that point
Down and more East Sooke road.......and at long last onto the highway and home.

A short run off the bike and I am done.....

Now some Aussie open tennis, Hernandez restaurant and a salt bath.......then i shall have the sleep of the dead.

Goodnight Michelle

Bike Camp Season- Day 1

My favorite thing about this time of year is a chance to do some training camps with the cycling teams here in victoria. Last year I spent a few camps with the National Cycling center and it was incredibly beneficial. This year, I have the chance to train with one of Canada's up and coming young teams.....Giga-Bike.

Today was Day 1 of the January camp and what a treat....great group of young guys to hit it out with. Today was a pretty chill ride with two TT's....one climbing up Willis point road, 4km up with some steep pitches. The second is a flat loop starting at the Waddling dog pub. It's a good marker for the start of the year to get a gauge on where you are at.

This year was not much different time-wise from last year. I made it up Willis point in 10 minutes, not quite under and similar to last year but one notch lower on the effort level. Man it felt good to open up the lungs and giver! The best part of the day was watching Max Plaxton break the record and land an 8:45....yikes that dude is fast!

It's good to be rolling again, we will cover close to 20 hours of riding in 4 days...a good shocker to the system and incredible how efficient you feel by the end of it. Long days followed by nights where you feel rosy and warm after a salt bath and some good food....ahhhh, nothing better than this, except probably playing in the NHL.....where long days would be followed by expensive dinners, bling and good wine.....that would be pretty sweet too.
